When working with HDMI equipment, video processors, extenders, or converters, you may encounter a source listed as YCbCr while the output is identified as YUV. Although the terminology can be confusing, this usually does not indicate a significant change to the video signal.
What Are YCbCr and YUV?
Both YCbCr and YUV represent video using separate brightness and color information rather than the red, green, and blue channels used by RGB.
- Y represents brightness, or luma.
- Cb/U represents blue-difference color information.
- Cr/V represents red-difference color information.
Technically, YUV refers to an analog color system, while YCbCr is its digital counterpart. Because modern HDMI signals are digital, YCbCr is technically the more accurate term.
However, many displays, video processors, test equipment, and manufacturers use the term YUV as a general label for YCbCr video.
Does YCbCr Input to YUV Output Mean a Conversion?
Not necessarily.
For example, if a device receives:
YCbCr 4:4:4 → YUV 4:4:4
the input and output may effectively be using the same digital color format. The device or software may simply use different terminology to describe it.
The more important specification to check is the chroma subsampling.
- 4:4:4 – Full color information for every pixel.
- 4:2:2 – Some horizontal color information is reduced.
- 4:2:0 – Color information is reduced both horizontally and vertically.
If the device receives YCbCr 4:4:4 but outputs YUV 4:2:0, then the signal is actually being processed and chroma information is being reduced.
The Bottom Line
Seeing YCbCr on the input and YUV on the output is generally not a cause for concern. In digital AV equipment, the terms are frequently used to describe essentially the same type of luma/chroma video signal.
When troubleshooting video quality or compatibility, pay more attention to whether the signal is 4:4:4, 4:2:2, or 4:2:0, as well as its resolution, refresh rate, color depth, and HDR format. These characteristics provide much more useful information about whether the video signal is actually being converted.
